A Class I girl student of a government school has reportedly been sexually assaulted by her classmate in Sirsa district. The five-year-old victim and the boy, who assaulted her, are classmates, the police said.

The police today registered a case of sexual assault under the POCSO Act on a complaint by the mother of the victim. Sirsa DSP Rajesh Kumar told mediapersons that the police had registered a case and started investigation. “There is a provision that a child below the age of seven cannot be made an accused,” he said. The girl was admitted to hospital, he added.

The victim’s mother has identified the assaulter as a classmate of her daughter. The two children had gone to the toilet of the school where the incident occurred. The DSP said that they would try to identify the child after the girl is discharged from the hospital.
