Chandigarh, March 3

The authorities in Haryana on Tuesday sounded an alert to residents of villages along the Yamuna river following heavy rainfall in the hills of neighbouring Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

The alert has been sounded in view of the rising level of water in the Yamuna river. People have asked not to go near the river or let their animals venture near it.

In Yamunanagar district, deputy commissioner J. Ganeshan said that officials of various departments have sounded the heads of all villages along the river about the rise in water level in the river.

Irrigation department executive engineer Atul Narang said that the water level at the Hathnikund barrage along the Haryana-Uttarakhand border had risen from 56,000 cusecs on Monday morning to 87,000 cusecs in the evening.

He said that the water level had started receding again on Tuesday.

The Yamuna river passes through Yamunanagar, Karnal and Panipat districts in Haryana.
