The Haryana Government announced today that former Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev will be the first Chancellor of Haryana Sports University at Rai, Sonepat.

The order by Principal Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Anand Mohan Sharan said the terms and conditions of his appointment will be issued in due course. Haryana Sports Minister Anil Vij also tweeted about the development earlier in the day.

With his all-round performance, Kapil Dev not only led India to its first cricket World Cup victory in 1983, but later also broke Richard Hadlee’s record of highest Test wickets. He ended his career with 5,248 runs and 434 wickets in 131 Tests. In One-Day Internationals, he scored 3,783 runs and took 253 wickets in 225 matches. He had also represented Haryana.

It was in the Monsoon session of the Haryana Assembly when the Sports University of Haryana Bill, 2019 was passed. The statutes of the University mandates that the Chancellor has to be an “eminent person in the field of sports who will either be a sportsperson of international repute himself or a renowned sports administrator or a renowned sports academician”. The tenure will be of three years. The Chancellor will be an honorary officer of the university.
