Chandigarh, August 25

Only five chairpersons of various commissions, holding constitutional posts, will now be eligible for government accommodation in Chandigarh.

According to Government Residences (Chandigarh Administration General Pool) Allotment (Amendment) Rules, 2019, only chairpersons of the human rights commissions, Lokayuktas, Chief Information Commissioners, State Election Commissioners and Chief Commissioner of the Right to Service established by the Punjab, Haryana and UT Chandigarh, will now be entitled to government accommodation in Chandigarh.

“The application of any other commission/authority constituted by the state governments, for government accommodation, will not be considered irrespective of any provision in their appointment letters. They can be provided financial compensation for securing accommodation by the appointing authorities,” an order issued by Ajay Kumar Singla, Secretary, House Allotment Committee, Chandigarh Administration, said.

The new rules are in sharp contrast to the existing practice under which a large number for persons holding constitutional posts, including members of various commissions, were allotted accommodation in Chandigarh.

The governments of Punjab, Haryana and UT Administration have a large number of commissions which have scores of members. In the past, a majority of them got government accommodation in Chandigarh.

Those entitled to govt accommodation

  • Chairperson of the human rights panel
  • Lokayuktas of Punjab, Haryana
  • Chief Information Commissioners
  • State Election Commissioners
  • Chief Commissioner of the Right to Service
