Shimla, June 19

A theft in the book café run by jail inmates on The Ridge last night has put a question mark on the safety and security of property in the heart of the capital town.

It was on Tuesday morning that some tourists called up to inform the police that monkeys were ransacking the book café. The police on arrival found that the glass panes of the café had been broken and a theft had taken place.

The book café, a unique and very well-lauded initiative, had been inaugurated by former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh last year. It has a good collection of books.

“Initially, we thought that the staff had probably forgotten to close the doors and windows, as a result monkeys had entered in it. However, we realised a theft had taken place as two kindle e-book reader devices and some eatables had been stolen,” revealed Bhanu Prakash, Chief Welfare Officer, Prisons. A case has been registered. — TNS
