UNA, MAY 21

The Una Municipal Committee has passed a resolution, terminating mid-way the year-old city sanitation contract with Sulabh International. MC President Amarjot Singh Bedi said the decision was taken on Sunday since the agency was unable to render services as per the agreement and the sanitation condition in the city was going from bad to worse.

The contract included cleaning of roads and residential areas, garbage collection and disposal, besides maintaining public toilets and providing gardening services in two city parks. Sulabh was supposed to deploy a staff of 56 persons everyday, besides providing two garbage pick-up tippers to cover all city wards.

However, the agency provided only two tractors and the sanitation staff never exceeded 40 persons. The garbage kept on piling.

Bedi said since the agency representative failed to provide any satisfactory reply, an emergency meeting of the Councillors was held on May 17 in which it was decided to cancel the sanitation contract with the existing agency and invite fresh short term tenders.
