J&K jails to have inmate calling system

JAMMU: Director General of Police (Prisons), J&K, VK Singh today announced to start an inmate calling system which would enable the inmates to call their relatives and advocates on select days.

Director General of Police (Prisons), J&K, VK Singh today announced to start an inmate calling system which would enable the inmates to call their relatives and advocates on select days.

Initially, the facility will be introduced at Central Jails, Srinagar and Kotbhalwal, Jammu, besides District Jail, Jammu. The facility will not be available to the prisoners involved in grave offences or misconduct in jail.

This announcement was made by the DGP, Prisons, while addressing a conference of Jail Superintendents of Jammu jails here today.

“Through this system, inmates will be able to call two close relatives for five-minute duration each on select days,” VK Singh said while highlighting that the department was improving the interview rooms in jails by providing cabins and child-friendly corners.

The DGP, Prisons, also appreciated the efforts made by Jail Superintendents for maintaining security and discipline in jails, besides improving the vocational and educational skills of inmates. He informed that focus was being laid on welfare, training and development of prison staff.

While highlighting the role of recreation in the reformation of inmates, VK Singh said recreation facilities were being made available in jails.

Moreover, inmates were being encouraged for participating in cultural and sports activities, besides vocational training.
