Two attackers had also been killed in the ongoing operation as of Saturday evening -- the men wore fatigues and carried assault rifles, a large amount of ammunition and hand grenades -- said army spokesman Lt Col Devender Anand.

Among the wounded were five women and children, he said.

The site was cordoned off and surrounded by police and army units called in as reinforcements. Efforts to clear the camp were ongoing, Anand said. “The operations will continue till all terrorists are apprehended or killed,” he said.

The Jammu IGP told The Tribune that initial reports suggested that a group of three to four terrorists had reportedly managed to sneak into the highly fortified Army camp.

The camp has many residential quarters for the families of the army men.

The terrorists breached the rear side of the Sunjwan Army camp near Sainik Colony on the outskirts of the city during the intervening night.

Initial reports suggest that terrorists entered the camp at 5 am. The Sunjwan army camp has quarters for the families of the army men. A Kendriya Vidayalya is situated metres from the attack side.

A high alert has been sounded in Jammu and security beefed up in and around the city.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to DGP SP Vaid and took stock of the situation.

Schools around the Army camp have been closed.

Intelligence inputs had warned of an attack on the Army or security establishment by Jaish-e-Mohammed in view of the death anniversary of Afzal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013.

Meanwhile, BJP and opposition members created uproar in the Assembly over the terror attack. Amid the din the Speaker adjourned the House for 15 minutes. — With agencies
