In Jammu and Kashmir, the frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir has the highest number of candidates in the fray for the Block Development Council elections. As many as 101 candidates are contesting elections from Kupwara. The district also has the highest number of electors — 2,783 — and highest number of Independent candidates — 95.
Kupwara is followed by Baramulla district, where 90 candidates, including 87 Independents, are in the fray, as per official data. The lowest number of two Independent candidates is in Kulgam district.
Jammu district is at the third place and has 82 candidates in the fray for the elections. Jammu has 2,703 electors. There are 82 Independent candidates in Jammu district.
The lowest number of four candidates is in Shopian district in south Kashmir, which is considered the hotbed of militancy. Shopian has 82 electors. From Srinagar, only five candidates are contesting the elections and there are only 43 voters.
