Crackdown on traffic violators in Kishtwar

In a major drive launched against the flouting of traffic rules and regulations, the Kishtwar police have booked several violators and imposed fine on them.

During the last two months, the Kishtwar police issued 2,193 challans, seized 114 vehicles, suspended five driving licences, lodged seven FIRs at the Kishtwar police station and collected a fine of Rs 6,15,100 from the traffic violators. This is the highest penalty imposed in two consecutive months ever.

The joint action has been launched by the Kishtwar district police along with the motor vehicles department and the traffic police, which laid special posts at various points and started patrolling in and around the town.

Giving details, Kishtwar SSP Rajinder Gupta said the drive had been possible due to the coordinated efforts of the traffic police, the motor vehicles department and the local policemen.

After the police action, people have heaved a sigh of relief and expressed happiness on the steps taken.

At the same time, the SSP warned the vehicle operators of a strict action if they don’t follow the traffic rules. He said traffic violators were directly or indirectly responsible for causing fatal road accidents, leading to the loss of lives.

Appealing to the parents not to allow their underage children to ride two-wheelers, Gupta said the drive would continue till the time violators don’t start following the traffic rules.

Meanwhile, acting against the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited for not maintaining the Batote-Kishtwar-Sinthantop highway, the SSP got an FIR registered against the contractors.

8 cases filed against erring drivers

Doda: To check overloading, the Traffic Police filed eight cases against erring drivers of passenger vehicles in Doda and Kishtwar districts within a week’s time. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Zoheb Patigaroo said, “Overloading and rash driving always remain a major challenge for us. In the last four days, we have filed eight FIRs in this regard. Two cases were registered at Bhaderwah, three in Doda and three in Kishtwar,” the officer said. A vehicle with a seating capacity of 24 was travelling with 54 passengers. It was impounded and an FIR was registered against the driver in Doda district. Another vehicle with a seating capacity of 28 was travelling with 45 passengers. Similar action was taken against the drivers in all cases. In all, 2,193 vehicles were challaned, 114 vehicles impounded, five driving licences suspended and a fine of Rs 6,15,100 was imposed on the violators in the past two months in Kishtwar. District Magistrate, Kishtwar, Angrez Singh Rana has asked all district officials to check traffic violations and overloading.  OC
