Legal aid clinic inaugurated at JU

JAMMU: Vinod Chatterji Koul, Principal District and Sessions Judge, and Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Jammu, today inaugurated the legal aid clinic at the Department of Law, University of Jammu, here.

Vinod Chatterji Koul, Principal District and Sessions Judge, and Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Jammu, today inaugurated the legal aid clinic at the Department of Law, University of Jammu, here.

Speaking on the occasion, Chatterjee said the move was in compliance with the directions issued by the National Legal Services Authority. He said the clinic would be manned by a retainer lawyer and paralegal volunteers among the students duly appointed by the DLSA, Jammu.

“The legal aid clinics are intended to provide legal relief accessible to the needy and backward section of society. The thrust is on the basic legal services, like legal advice and assisting in drafting of notices, replies, applications, petitions, etc,” he said.

Slahuddin Ahmed, Additional Mobile Magistrate (Traffic), Jammu, was the guest of honour.

An awareness programme on “Drug Abuse and its Eradication” was organised wherein resource persons from the Department of Excise, apprised the students about the drug menace and ways and means for its eradication through awareness.

Students of the Department of Law also presented their views on the topic. Later, Slahudin Ahmed held an interactive session and cleared doubts of students regarding implementation of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in the state. Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Head, Department of Law, was also present.
