Young minds discuss artificial intelligence

Dhvani Gupta of Jodhamal Public School on Friday bagged the first prize in the inter-school debate on topic “Artificial intelligence: Boon or bane for human life” organised by The Tribune at Army Public School (APS), Damana, here.

As many as 26 students from 13 prominent schools of Jammu participated in the contest. The event was sponsored by Chitkara University.

Dheeraj Singh Bhau of host APS Damana won the second prize, while the third prize went to Vedanth Mohit of Jammu Sanskriti School. Three consolation prizes were also distributed.

Tarini Mangotra of Delhi Public School bagged the first consolation prize, Ananya Choudhary of Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School second and Aman Sharma of BSF Higher Secondary School, Paloura, third. The host APS, Damana, was adjudged the best school in the event.

Students expressed merits and demerits of artificial intelligence with great eloquence.

Brig Abhijit Chandra of 19 Infantry Brigade and the chairman of the APS, Damana, was the chief guest at the event, while Arun Joshi, Senior Resident Editor, The Tribune, J&K, was the guest of honour.

The two jury members comprised Dr Vivek Sharma, senior assistant professor, department of lifelong learning, University of Jammu, and Dr Kumar Saurab, assistant professor, computer sciences department, GGM Science College, Jammu.

Dr Renu Gupta, principal, APS, Damana, and Randhir Singh, deputy manager (marketing), The Tribune, Chandigarh, were also present on the occasion. The event began with the lighting of a traditional lamp by the chief guest, guest of honour and jury members.

Later, the guest of honour distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up.

Speaking on the occasion, Joshi said, “Despite the heavy presence of artificial intelligence, human intelligence is still unmatched. We have to live with artificial intelligence, but it should not overtake human intelligence. We are the creators of our own frontiers.”

The proceedings of the contest were conducted by Ipsa Kohli and Arjun Jaipuria, Class IX students of the host school.

Musical performances enthral audience

Students of the host Army Public School, Damana, left the audience spellbound with their mesmerising musical performances during the concluding ceremony of the Inter-School Debate-2018 organised  by The Tribune in Jammu on Friday. They presented a traditional Dogri folk song. A solo classical musical performance by a Class VI student, Umika Sharma, with Amijot Singh, a Class VIII student, on tabla got a big round of applause from the audience.
