Three students from the district have won gold in a state-level yoga competition and have made it to National Yoga Olympiad to be held in Delhi from June 18 to 20.

The olympiad is being organised by the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) to promote yoga among students.

Officials associated with the event in the district said though this year, the participation in Yoga Olympiad at the district level was much less as compared to the previous year, three students from Jalandhar, who had made it to the national level by clearing district and state-level competition, had made them proud.

Students of Cantonment Board Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar Cantonment — Gautam, Navjot Singh and Anurag Kumar — will participate in the national-level competition.

They have been selected from the U-16 team. As many as 20 districts had participated in the state-level competition that was held in Mohali on May 15. In the state-level competition, students (girls and boys) participated in the U-14 and U-16 categories.

Coach Surinder Mohan, who was also the manager of the team from Jalandhar, said they had got less time to prepare for the state-level competition. He said when the boys were asked to perform asanas and pranayama (kapalbhati and anulom vilom), they did all of these very well.

“I am happy that three of my students have been selected for the national-level competition,” Mohan said, adding that even the girls’ team also managed to won silver. He said but they could not make it to the national event.

The students performed various asanas, including sarvangasana, kukkutasana, trikonasana, dhanurasana, makarasana, pawanmuktasana and setu sandhasana.

Last year, the olympiad was organised by the NCERT in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH. In 2015, the maiden event on Yoga Day was held at Rajpath in New Delhi.

Mohan added that yoga helps the students eradicate all wrong feelings that are generated in them at this tender age.
