36th Surjit Hockey from Oct 10, 16 teams in fray

JALANDHAR: The 36th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament will be played at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here from October 10 to 19.

The 36th Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament will be played at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here from October 10 to 19.

Presiding over a meeting of Surjit Hockey Society, Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, Varinder Kumar Sharma, who is also the president of the society said the tournament was organised every year by the society.

He said Indian Oil Corporation Limited would be the main title sponsor of the tournament. As many as 16 teams, including Punjab National Bank, Indian Navy Mumbai, Army XI, Bharat Petroleum, Oil & Natural Gas Commission, Dehradun, Indian Air Force, Delhi, Punjab and Sind Bank, Indian Railways, Delhi, Punjab Police, Air India, Mumbai & Indian Oil, Mumbai, Namdhari, RCF Kapurthala, BSF, CRPF Delhi and CAG Delhi will participate in the tournament.

The champion of men section will get a cash award for Rs 5.50 lakh, while the runners-up will be awarded a cash award for Rs 2.51 lakh.

The Deputy Commissioner said: the Surjit Hockey Society is playing a vanguard role for grooming the young players and told that the society has produced several players who have proved their mettle at the national and international events.

Sharma said the society was making every effort to channelise the unbounded energy of youth in a positive manner especially in the field of sports. He said to commemorate the 550th Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev, the hockey society will distribute 550 hockey kits among players.
