Jalandhar, October 17

In a major relief for commuters moving through the city via the congested local PAP Chowk, decks have been cleared for restarting the work on the stalled PAP-Rama Mandi flyover project.

Deputy Commissioner Varinder Sharma visited the site of the flyover today. He said the work needs to be started at the earliest to give a major reprieve to people.

He said Rs 4 lakh had been issued to Powecom for shifting of poles alongside the road from the PAP Gate No. 4 to Gate No. 1. This work was expected to be completed this week after which the road would be widened by 3-5 metres to ease out the traffic congestion by providing another service lane.

The Deputy Commissioner said once the work was started for the construction of the flyover at PAP Chowk, this additional service lane would help in easing out traffic on the stretch.

However, Sharma said as the stretch witnesses a lot of traffic round the clock, hence adequate steps were required to ensure safety of the commuters.

He said besides diversion of heavy traffic, adequate deployment of the police force would be made to ensure smooth and hassle-free traffic movement.

The work on the construction of the 3.20-km-long flyover has been hanging fire for the past over nine years. The project was significant for commuters travelling from Delhi to Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Pathankot and Jammu via Jalandhar.
