First case of Japanese encephalitis detected in Hoshiarpur

HOSHIARPUR: After last month’s diarhoea and cholera outbreak, now the state’s first case of Japanese encephalitis (brain fever) has been detected in Hoshiarpur.

After last month’s diarhoea and cholera outbreak, now the state’s first case of Japanese encephalitis (brain fever) has been detected in Hoshiarpur.

The 10-year-old patient suffering from the brain fever has been admitted to the PGI, Chandigarh. After receiving information from the PGI, the Health Department swing into action and an investigation team was immediately formed and sent to Bullowal, the village of the victim.

Anti-mosquito spraying was also done in Bullowal and nearby areas. It is reported that the suspected patient of brain fever was brought to the local Civil Hospital two days ago. Afterwards, he was taken to another hospital by her family. She was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, due to symptoms of brain fever.

District Epidemiologist Shailesh Kumar said due to the symptoms of Japanese encephalitis in the patient, the local Health Department had been informed by the PGI authorities.

Dr Shailesh told The Tribune that the final report of the girl was yet to arrive. Taking precautions, the department on Sunday, sent 12 teams to conduct anti-mosquito spraying in the Bullowal area and a survey was being done in the surrounding four-five villages.
