Starting a new initiative for changing the mind of desperate people, the district administration will provide free counselling to save them from taking any extreme step.

Divulging details, DC Amit Kumar said due to the exam phobia or stress, students or debt-ridden farmers can take extreme steps such as suicide. To avert such incidents, there would be a need of counselling that may be helpful at this stage.

“We are engaging a government counsellor, besides two private counsellors to start the service from the next week,” he said.

The DC said the contact numbers of the counsellors would be shared through the social media and other sources so that needy persons may get benefit from the same.

Describing the concept of ‘Nivekala Nawanshahr’, he said it had been chalked out to start new initiatives such as skill training, competitive exam coaching and e-library to benefit unemployed youth, particularly dropouts.

He said as per the Punjab Child Beggary Prevention Act, 1971, those who promote child beggary or use a child for begging, would be punished for three years after getting booked under Section 9 of the Act.

Similarly, Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, also prohibits child beggary and there was a provision of five years’ imprisonment, besides Rs 1 lakh penalty. The DC appealed to people to not to promote child begging in any case and inform the authorities at district helpline number 01823-222322 if they see someone exploiting children for beggary.

To provide quality education as per the commitment of the state government, Nawanshahr would soon have a government college. For the purpose, a five-acre land has been identified at Jadla village on the Chandigarh road.

The DC said the Public Works Department (PWD) had been told to get the requisite formalities complete as earliest as possible so that the construction work should be started after getting all approvals.

He said Nawanshahr SDM Aditya Uppal had been entrusted with the task of getting complete the required formalities related to the land.
