Back to the future

Major Tej Pratap Singh was posted in Republic of South Sudan, Africa, in 2013. During this time, reportedly, South Sudan has been in a civil war since 2013 and as of 2017, it had the highest score on the Fragile States Index (formerly, the Failed States Index), surpassing Somalia. 

This is the time when Tej Pratap started writing a book about time travel; it is his first book. “I have been writing this book since 2013, I had some time there, and finished writing it in 2015. I have been interested in writing ever since I was a kid; and I have written many short stories since, but this is the first novel I have written,” he says. 

According to him, the book explores topics like time travel and is about a man who comes back from the future. “In 2956—the world is divided between two massive superpowers — The Armed Military Union (A.M.U) and the International Federation (I.F). The A.M.U and the I.F are involved in a brutal war for complete world domination,” he says.

The book revolves around a fictional character Commander Kenneth Cent (KC), who commands the Northern Sector of the A.M.U and is a fearless leader. 

During one of the battles in the heart of the I.F stronghold, Commander KC is captured by the I.F who executes the most clandestine and surreptitious operation by sending KC back in time to the year 2017. In the course to get to the bottom of everything KC is crushed and tossed physically and emotionally. He is chased by the most ferocious agency agents, arms’ dealers and drug traffickers after he shoots his girlfriend – Jenny, only to realize that she is his wife from the year 2956 whom he had already lost once in that time. “KC is in the army too, but the book is purely fictional. He is smart, and is thrice as fast as an average man. But even with all these assets, he struggles to make his way back home across an entirely different time and reality,” he adds.  For research, Singh studied Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. “There is a possibility that we could warp space-time to travel back in time—as quoted by Stephen Hawking,” he says.

Tej Pratap has served in the military for over a dozen years and is a recipient of two gallantry awards for anti-terrorist operations, Sena Medal and Mention-in-Despatches.—TNS
