IVORY TOUCH: chikankari in ivory is one easy-breezy, comforfortable statement for The hot season

Mona

You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it, said costume designer Edith Head; how about dressing for the season of summer? It’s raining florals, prints, polka dots, monochromes and neons, inspirations plenty to pick from runaways around the world. Designers lend a helping hand.

Monochromatic vibe

Nothing monotonous about monochromatics. In fact, they work very well with Indian summer if you choose the right fabric and cuts.

  • Easy to put together, monochromes rock in layered ensembles.
  • Pick up the shades of ivory, beige and taupe to be in sync with the season.
  • Stay with the same tone from head to toe, top to bottom, shades to shoulder bag.
  • Break the uniformity with cuts and silhouettes that go best with your body type.
  • A pop of colour at the ankle or neckline, if you choose to break away from convention.

Neon takes off

Neon has made a comeback with a modern twist. We are now seeing the reflective colour scheme in a new, gentler light. This bright and tacky colour is shedding its past tag to take on a sophisticated hue.

  • Pair a neon trouser with a white shirt and neon jacket; wear high heels and minimal make-up to complete the office look.
  • Go for a jumpsuit or a throw-on-and-go maxi dress in reflective shades.
  • Neon roll necks under dresses, blazers and other knits give a slight nod to this fluorescent trend.
  • Wear sandals with hints of neon to take spring basics to electric new levels.
  • Add energy with neon top-handle bags, clutches.

Best foot forward

Traditional or western, juttis are the one versatile piece of footwear that can instantly add some sparkle and shine to one’s overall look.

  • For the ultra-feminine look, printed juttis are perfect; pair these with maxis and skater dresses.
  • With a bright pair combine something sober like a summer pastel dress to  highlight your footwear.
  • Boxy kurta or crop tops with cigarette pants pair well with pastel undertones of colourful polka dots for Sunday brunches.
  • Ditch your heels for comfort with flower-cut sequins and bright coloured juttis, with lovely dhoti pants and  sarees.

Flaunt floral

Floral sundresses and summer go hand in hand. Play with floral prints in maxis, skirts, dresses of all kinds.

  • Floral sundresses are perfect bet for beating the heat. Contrast you footwear or heels to add drama.
  • Long, flowing earrings and heels in pastels is all you need to put your pretty printed dress out there.
  • Pair pastel blooms with pieces that keep you feeling cool.
  • Accessories with colourful sunglasses and wide-brimmed sunhats in neutrals.

— Pooja Shroff, designer

Craft of chikankari

An elegant piece of chikankari is a must-have Indian staple. A touch of Indian culture, it fits every occasion; casual or special.

  • Chikankari kurtis with a solid-coloured palazzo or a flared skirt will make sure the focus is on the outfit and still not over-the-top. Pair them with a tan bag and you are good to go.
  • For a fusion and incredibly stylish look, team your chikankari-wear with Ikat print tops, dhoti pants or flared pants and stand out from the crowd.

— Vandana Malhotra, designer

Patch it up

Patchwork, when it comes to clothing, is one of the most eye-catching patterns that you can choose. Made up of blocks of different colours and patterns, it has a chic, relaxed look that is sure to make a statement.

  • Patchwork print dresses tend to have a ‘70s inspired look that makes them perfect for a boho pick. Make a modern statement with a dress.
  • Pair a floral patchwork dress with sandals or suede boots in a natural colour. Add dangling beaded earrings, a corded necklace and a fringed purse to finish off the look.
