FOR every snatching incident which is reported, there are at least two that go unreported. Apart from the improvement in the law and order, there is also an urgent need for the public to take precautions and not adopt a cavalier attitude when it comes to their safety. Carrying large amount of cash and jewellery in handbags and purses is surely not a wise idea.

Residents, especially women, should attend self-defense courses - at least the basic do's and don'ts can be learnt. Most of these precautions are plain commonsense that sometimes escapes our attention. Let's drill into our minds that discretion is the better part of valour. Women, for one, must learn to walk unapologetically - with sure, purposeful strides. Avoid unlit areas. Don't get so engrossed in talking over the mobile phone that you don't even know who is crossing your path/who is following you. Jewellery pieces screaming for attention are a safety hazard. Area residents, in coordination with the police, can evolve a (security) system in their locality to keep at bay the snatchers-on-prowl.
