Ludhiana, June 27

Three out of five water samples taken from Giaspura area, where diarrhoea cases were detected, have failed the test.

Two samples passed the test, while in three, the presence of E Coli was detected.

E Coli is a type of fecal coliform bacteria commonly found in the intestines of animals and humans. The presence of E Coli in water is an indication of sewage or animal waste contamination in drinking water. Meanwhile, 10 stool samples were also collected but these tested negative for cholera.

District Epidemiologist Dr Ramesh said three out of five water samples have failed the test and have been found contaminated. “Presence of E Coli has been confirmed in the tests,” he said. Today 35 new patients were detected and admitted to the hospital. Some were discharged after getting the first aid, while 24 were admitted to the hospital.

District Epidemiologist Dr Ramesh said today 1,261 houses were visited by the health teams and 1,314 chlorine tablets and 207 ORS packets were distributed.

“People are continuously being made aware regarding the disease and are asked to maintain hygiene. Stress is being laid on washing hands before and after meals and toilet. Twelve group meetings were held in this regard today,” he said. Shanti Devi, a resident of the area, said every year the area comes under the clutches of diseases like diarrhoea and gastroenteritis, but no permanent solution has been found for these.
