After the declaration of results, the winning candidates promised to ensure all-round development of their zones.

Thanking the voters and their supporters, candidates made claims to get dirty ponds renovated, roads constructed, sewer systems installed and provision of other basic amenities.

Gurmit Singh (70) from Jasdev Singh Nagar Panchayat Samiti Zone said: “After winning the elections, my agenda is only to ensure development in the areas falling under our zone. Many development works are lying pending in these areas. Construction and repair of roads, proper functioning sewerage system and provision of other basic amenities will be assured to the residents. I will work for the development of the zone without any discrimination.”

Sukhdev Singh, who won the election from Shehzad Panchayat Samiti Zone, said: “I am thankful to people for their support. Now, it is my duty to carry out development works in the zone. My focus will be on the renovation of ponds and open drains passing through the villages. Besides, street and road infrastructure will be developed. I will make efforts for the installation of sewerage system in villages of the zone.”

Sukhwinder Singh, who has registered win from Ladhian Panchayat Samiti Zone, said he wanted to carry out over-all development works in the villages falling under his zone.

After winning the elections from the Ladhowal Panchayat Samiti Zone, Varinder Kumar said: “Residents gave me overwhelming support. I will fulfil the promises made to them.”

Dirty ponds, unavailability of proper sewerage system, open drains and lack of street lights are major issues in various villages. Besides, residents of several colonies which fall outside the MC jurisdiction seek development of their respective areas and want regularisation of the unauthorised colonies.

Incessant rain fails to dampen enthusiasm of candidates’ supporters

Ludhiana: The incessant rain did not deter the supporters from celebrating the victory of their candidates outside the institutes where counting centres were set up here on Saturday.  After winning candidates came out of centres, they were given warm welcome and garlanded by their supporters.  Some of them were even holding umbrellas to protect the winning candidates from rain, which had begun in the wee hours and continued till night. Several supporters kept sharing updates about the results over the social media and phone calls. Congress supporter Inderjit Singh said: “We are very happy with the win registered by our party candidates. We celebrated it by distributing sweets and have planned to conduct a road show to mark our victory.” Meanwhile, traffic snarls were witnessed near some of the institutes which doubled as counting centres. However, the police were deployed to control the traffic movement. — Harshraj Singh
