Arunachal, Meghalaya fear influx

GUWAHATI:Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, that have long boundaries with Assam, have sounded an alert against the possible influx from Assam of residents whose names have been left out of the final draft NRC.

Guwahati, July 31

Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, that have long boundaries with Assam, have sounded an alert against the possible influx from Assam of residents whose names have been left out of the final draft NRC.

Anticipating infiltration of people from Assam as a fallout of the NRC darft publication , the Arunachal Pradesh Government has directed the Chief Secretary and DGP to ensure sufficient personnel at all entry points. The frontier hill state shares an 804-km boundary with Assam.

The Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations Act of 1875 restricts entry of non-Arunachali citizens without an Inner Line Permit. Strict checking has been ordered at all entry gates as well as airports, heliports and the lone railway station at Naharlagun.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Government has also issued instructions to the district administrations to remain vigilant. — TNS
