Congress rejects Modi’s claim of Sonia being extra constitutional

New Delhi, May 27

The Congress today rejected as "untrue and utterly false" Prime Minister Narendra Modi's accusations that extra-constitutional authorities outside of the Prime Minister's Office were wielding power during the Congress-led UPA regime.

Reacting to the PM's statement targeted at Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who was the UPA chairperson, Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad today said, "PM Narendra Modi should speak the truth sometimes. The position of the PM is an exalted one. The PM should ensure its dignity. His accusation is utterly false. There was no day-to-day interference in the functioning of the UPA government."

The Congress argued that the government is always the government of the party it represents.

Ahmad said, "It is one thing for the party to guide its government on policies, but quite another to dictate it on a day-to-day basis. It is the party's work to formulate policies for the government as we did with the RTI Act, NREGA and farm loan waiver. These policies went from the party to the government which implemented them. We, however, categorically deny day-to-day interference in the UPA government."

On Modi's take on Rahul Gandhi's “Suit boot ki sarkar" jibe and the Congress' inability to digest its crushing Lok Sabha defeat, the Congress said the BJP would know better if "electoral losses harmed digestion as it had lost elections successively post 1952". — TNS
