The Left Front carries a huge burden of expectation of Opposition parties to secure its bastion state Tripura from BJP’s attempts to make inroads into the state in the Assembly elections scheduled for February 18.

The palpable concerns in the non-BJP camp are as much of the immediate context of the Assembly election as of the 2019 General Election. The Left block traditionally acts as a monolith and a steady pillar of ideological and intellectual opposition to the right wing BJP in all its dimensions in Parliament, and outside it.

While non-BJP ranks are fingers crossed on how the main Opposition Congress would shape up under its new president Rahul Gandhi, they would not like the saffron party to spread its network in the state which would be used for its national profile. Leader of the CPI in Rajya Sabha D Raja today said the expectation would not be belied as the Left Front is poised to form the government for the sixth consecutive term. “The BJP is trying hard to somehow get a toehold in the northeastern Left-ruled state. By virtue of being in power at the Centre it may make apparent presence in the state, but it will be nowhere on electoral horizon,” Raja said.
