New Delhi, June 15

Currently passing through a “weak” phase, the southwest monsoon is expected to revive around June 19/20.

Private forecaster Skymet’s Mahesh Palawat told The Tribune on Friday that seasonal rains could pick up pace around June 19/20 and cover various parts of northwest around expected onset dates.

Monsoon entering a weak phase is normal, say meteorologists.

According to Dr DS Pai, head of Pune-based Climate Prediction at Climate Research Division of IMD, “It is the characteristic of the monsoon that it travels in pulses. This characteristic helps monsoon cover all parts of the country. If this does not happen, the reach of the ongoing pulse would have stopped around central India.

The onset over the northwest is expected around its normal date (June 29), give or take two to three days. Generally the subsequent pulse is stronger.
