Bareilly (UP), September 18
A 19-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide here. Her family claimed she was upset over the delay in action against two men she had accused of trying to rape her. Her body was found hanging from the ceiling of her house, days after she had lodged a complaint.
The victim’s family members alleged the accused had tried to rape her on September 11 following which she informed the police, but her application was “thrown away”. A complaint was registered only after she met senior officials, they claimed. Taunted by locals, who came to know about the incident, she killed herself.
They also claimed SI Balvir Singh, who was investigating the matter, kept delaying, asking her to go for a medical examination. Taking serious note, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shailendra Pandey today suspended the SI and attached munshi Sandip, who had dismissed her application, with the Police Lines.
“Orders have been issued for a thorough probe and it will also be looked into as to why it took so long in registering the FIR. Stern action will be taken against those found responsible,” the SSP said. The two persons accused of the rape attempt have been arrested and two more nabbed for passing remarks on the victim, Pandey added. — PTI
