New Delhi, December 14

The SC today reserved its judgment on pleas for enhancing the jail term of Ansal brothers — Sushil and Gopal — in the Uphaar fire tragedy case.

The petitions against the real estate barons have been filed by the CBI and the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy. In all, 59 people died of suffocation due to the smoke emanating from the fire that broke out when they were watching Bollywood movie “Border” in the cinema hall in South Delhi on June 13, 1997. A three-member Bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Kurian Joseph and AK Goel passed the order at the conclusion of arguments by the petitioners and the brothers.
