Balasore district police have arrested a woman holding her responsible for the suicide of her friend, with whom she allegedly had a lesbian relationship, police said Monday.

The 19-year-old victim was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room on September 28 in Nilgiri area of the district.

The two were students of separate colleges and stayed in different hostels.

The lesbian angle “came to light after recovery of the suicide note and other evidences. The deceased and the accused were in a very close relationship. The deceased insisted to marry the accused,” Inspector In-Charge of Nilgiri police station Nalita Modi said.

When her friend rejected the proposal, she killed herself, Modi said adding that the accused was arrested for abetting her partner’s suicide.

Before committing suicide, the woman even sent a photo of the preparation for hanging to her partner. A diary, SMSs and WhatsApp messages revealed that they were in a lesbian relationship, Modi said. — PTI
