Fazilka, May 21

As many as 20 persons having allegiance with the BJP have been booked today for allegedly assaulting a sarpanch of Bakhushah village of the district on May 19.

Sarpanch Baljinder Singh, who claimed to have allegiance with the Congress, has alleged that he and his family members were refrained from casting their vote on the day of polling in the village. He said they had to pass through a street opposite the residence of the accused to reach the polling booth situated in a school. He alleged when they were on their way to cast their vote, the accused pelted them with stones.

The accused have been booked under Sections 341, 506, 188, 323, 148 and 149 of the IPC.

On the other hand, the BJP alleged that the police had implicated their supporters in false case. Rakesh Sehgal, personal assistant to former BJP Cabinet minister Surjit Kumar Jyani, said they would stage a protest for “implicating” their workers in assault case. — OC
