Fazilka, December 17

Sukhcharan Singh (46), a resident of Ratta Tibba village, was run over by a speeding car late this evening. The Home Guard constable was deployed at a barricade between Arniwala and Mullianwali village on the Malout road. Another constable, Anil Kumar (43), was seriously injured.

Davinderpal Singh, former sarpanch of Mullianwali village, said Sukhchain Singh and Anil Kumar signalled a car coming from Fazilka to stop. However, the driver rammed the vehicle into the duo. Sukhchain died on the spot, while Anil was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Fazilka, by his colleagues. Later, he was shifted to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot.

Witnesses said the car, after running over the Home Guard personnel, spun out of control and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer. The driver was reportedly arrested and the vehicle impounded. The police are investigating the matter.

In July, an “underage” driver of a Mercedes car had tried to run over a traffic policeman in Ludhiana after jumping lights. Traffic wing Home Guard Surinder Singh had suffered minor injuries.
