Jalandhar, October 16

Rajbir Singh Sekhon, father of Gurkirat Sekhon Gikki, expressed satisfaction over decision of the Punjab and Haryana Court to uphold life imprisonment against the four accused in the case.

“Against all odds, I fought the battle against four big families of Jalandhar for the past over eight years. I travelled from Jalandhar to Gurdaspur for every hearing in the first four years as the case was transferred there. I have attended almost all 100 hearings in the High Court to ensure justice for my son. I am grateful to the people of Jalandhar and the state for supporting me in the cause through various candlelight marches and Facebook campaigns,” he said.

A Gurdaspur court had sentenced the four accused to life imprisonment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and common intention under Sections 304 (1) and 34 of the IPC in August 2015. The HC today upheld the decision.

While earlier, Sekhon had been seeking conviction under Section 302 of the IPC, he said, “This perhaps was the best remedy that we could have.”

While ex-Akali MLA Sarabjit Makkar’s nephew Prince Makkar remains behind the bars, the other three accused — Amardeep Singh alias Sunny, Jasdeep Singh Jassu and Amarpreet Singh Narula — are out on bail. Arwinder Singh, father of Jassu, who was granted bail by the High Court in September 2016, did not comment on the verdict. “I am yet to see the copy of the order, so we cannot say anything”. Asked where his son was, he replied, “He is on bail and out somewhere”.

Dinky Narula, brother of Amarpreet, refused to comment. Sarabjit Makkar said he was not maintaining any relation with Prince.
