Tension gripped the Gobindpura colony of Sangrur on Friday evening after some persons allegedly damaged the Palki Sahib in the Vishavkarma shrine and shifted Guru Granth Sahib to the first floor of the shrine in the alleged violation of Sikh “maryada”. The police have arrested three persons and registered a case.

“Six persons damaged the Palki Sahib and shifted the Guru Granth Sahib. It’s sacrilege and we will launch an indefinite protest from Saturday if the police fail to arrest all six accused, who have done this sin,” said Bachitar Singh, president, Gurmat Parchar Ragi Granthi Sabha, Sangrur.

After getting the information of the incident, leaders of various Sikh organisations reached the spot and tried to enter the shrine which led to a clash between two groups. The timely action of the police prevented the situation from taking an ugly turn.

“More members of other organisations are reaching here. We will call a meeting to announce our future course of action,” said Gurdev Singh, a local resident.

“We have registered a case under Sections 295A of the IPC against six persons, including Amandeep Singhh, Manjit Singh, Parmjit Singh, Bhim Sain, Gurvir Singh and Ranjit Singh, for damaging the Palki Sahib and shifting the Guru Granth Sahib in the Vishavkarma temple. We have arrested three persons, including Amandeep, Manjit and one more person. We are conducting raids to arrest all accused,” said DSP Satpal Sharma.
