Strength or Weakness?

ANGLO-Indian papers have a strange way of identifying strength and weakness in Government. A show of physical strength without the support of moral strength is not real strength.

ANGLO-Indian papers have a strange way of identifying strength and weakness in Government. A show of physical strength without the support of moral strength is not real strength. The release of Mrs. Besant and the policy which it is believed to forestall is not weakness, as alleged by them, but strength. The people of India have now greater confidence in British statesmanship and justice. A policy of trust and reversal of repression will bring in the co-operation of the people and impart real strength to the Government. The Englishman asks: "How is it possible for it (Government) to retain the loyalty and respect and support of the great majority of moderate opinion…on which it must rely?" On the other hand, the Indian feeling of loyalty will be enhanced by considerate acts of Government inaugurating an era of trust instead of distrust in those who plead for constitutional reforms.
