DR. Bentley, Sanitary Commissioner of Bengal, recommends the systematic use of quinine in small doses as a certain preventive step for malaria and similar ailments. He points out how its use among European residents of Doears has resulted in obtaining practical immunity from fever to the European inhabitants. As regards the general population Dr. Bentley says it is probable “that the amount paid for fever specifics and patent medicines for the cure of malaria, most of which owe any value they possess to the quinine they contain, exceeds that spent on Government quinine a hundred times over. In many cases people willingly pay Rs. 1.4 to Rs. 1.12 for some quack remedy containing an amount of quinine which may be purchased at the post office for four annas.”
