NYT to cease political cartoons after anti-Semitism row

New York: The New York Times has announced it would no longer include daily political cartoons in its international edition, weeks after apologising for publishing a caricature of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu deemed anti-Semitic.



New York: The New York Times has announced it would no longer include daily political cartoons in its international edition, weeks after apologising for publishing a caricature of Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu deemed anti-Semitic. The cartoon, published in April, depicted Netanyahu as a guide dog wearing a Star of David collar and leading a blind Donald Trump, who was wearing a kippah, or a Jewish skullcap. It prompted an uproar within the Jewish community. The decision will come into effect on July 1, Bennet said. AFP

S Korean ex-first lady and women’s rights activist dies

Seoul: The widow of late South Korean president Kim Dae-jung, known for her women’s rights activism and involvement in her husband’s “sunshine” policy of engagement with the isolated North, has died at the age of 96. Lee Hee-ho, who had been battling liver cancer, died in Seoul on Monday, her aides said. Considered one of the pioneers of women’s rights in South Korea and a lifelong companion of late president Kim, Lee actively supported her husband’s tumultuous and illustrious political career. AFP

N Korean leader’s half brother was CIA informant: Report

Washington: Kim Jong-nam, the murdered half-brother of North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, was an informant for the CIA whose operatives met him on several occasions, according to a media report. Kim Jong-nam was assassinated at Kuala Lumpur in 2017 when two women smeared his face with what appeared to be a nerve gas. South Korean and US officials have said North authorities ordered the assassination of Kim. PTI

Washington: John Dean, the White House lawyer who helped bring about the Watergate downfall of Richard Nixon, has told Congress that there are “remarkable” similarities between the former president’s illegal behaviour and alleged acts of obstruction by Donald Trump. Dean told the House Judiciary Committee that the Mueller report, which outlines 10 possible acts of obstruction by Trump, is equivalent to the famous “road map” that prosecutor Leon Jaworski delivered to Congress in 1974, sparking impeachment proceedings against Nixon.
