Chandigarh police use water cannons to disperse the crowd

PANCHKULA: The Chandigarh Police used water cannons to disperse hundreds of students, who were marching towards Chandigarh to gherao the Haryana Assembly for demanding direct elections to students’ bodies.

The Chandigarh Police used water cannons to disperse hundreds of students, who were marching towards Chandigarh to gherao the Haryana Assembly for demanding direct elections to students’ bodies.

Led by Digvijay Chautala, INSO national president, Divyanshu Bhudhiraja, NSUI state president and Shahnawaz Bhatti, SFI president, hundreds of students gathered near Shalimar Mall in Sector 5, Panchkula, this morning.

Students from Yamunanagar, Ambala, Rohtak, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Karnal, Sonepat, Hisar and other districts of the state were also here to participate in the protest rally.

After the leaders addressed the protesters, they marched towards Chandigarh to gherao the state Assembly, which was in session.

However, the protesters were stopped at the housing board chowk by the Chandigarh Police. The students’ leaders handed over a memorandum to Tehsildar.

However, they were adamant to gherao the Assembly and tried to cross the barricades set up by the police.

After the students didn’t pay heed to the warning, the police used water cannons to disperse them. The students then departed for their respective destinations.

  • The protestors were stopped at the Housing Board Chowk.
  • They also tried to cross barricades set up by the police.
