Chandigarh, February 12

Continuing her public meetings in the city, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, a contender for the Congress ticket for the Chandigarh Parliamentary seat, addressed a group of women at hotel in Industrial Area, Phase 2, here today.

Dr Sidhu, a gynaecologist-turned-politician, focussed her speech on women empowerment at the all-women programme coordinated by former Mayor Poonam Sharma.

The former Punjab MLA has been a strong advocate of 50 per cent reservation for women across the board, right from government formation to each department, including provincial police forces. She told the gathering that “in politics, women were more in demand today than their male counterparts”.

PPP model opposed

The Chandigarh Ki Aawaz Party has opposed the move to push privatisation in the education sector. After meeting a delegation of school teachers and educators, Avinash Singh Sharma, Lok Sabha candidate of the party for the Chandigarh seat, said the PPP mode would mean exploitation of teachers as they would be paid less while their work would increase considerably.
