Mohali Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan today issued directions to all three Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to inspect structures in their respective areas and take action against the defaulters.

The action came after three days of the collapsing of a three-storey building on the Kharar-Landran road in Sector 115. Two persons were rescued, whereas a JCB driver had lost his life in the incident. The building had collapsed on February 8 as JCB driver had dug up the basement adjacent to the three-storey building beyond the permissible limit.

Dayalan said it would be checking on the lines of the instructions regarding construction and mandatory permissions required.

He said a survey on unsafe buildings would be conducted and corrective measures would be taken. The Deputy Commissioner said if any violation was found at the construction site, action should be taken against the MC official of the area concerned.

The Deputy Commissioner said municipal engineers had been directed to submit report twice a week till the basement was completely dug up.

He said many such projects were coming up in the vicinity of Mohali especially in Zirakpur where earlier also digging of basement was banned. Later, the ban was lifted, but was allowed only with strict compliance with the norms.
