Mohali, September 3

A mother for four was arrested for allegedly ill-treating and beating up her seven-year-old daughter in Gharuan today.

The 27-year-old, mother of a nine-year-old, seven-year old, four-year-old and a two-year-old, was arrested under the Juvenile Act and Sections 323, 336 and 308 of the IPC at the Gharuan police station.

The girl’s father is a fugitive, the police said.

The couple has three other children and the mother hits the other children too, the police said. “The sarpanch and panches of the village had warned the mother earlier too, but she did not listen,” said a village resident.

The Mohali team of NGO Childline and a counsellor tried to speak to the Class II girl today, but she was scared and did not say much. The child, with bruise marks on her back, has been handed over to her grandparents, who live on the ground floor of the house. Childline officials said they would present the child before the district child welfare committee on Monday for further action. — TNS
