Chandigarh, August 4

There is no move to alter the status of Panjab University, Chandigarh, from state to a Central university, the government said in Parliament. Answering a question by Vikramjit Singh Sahney, RS member, MoS for Education Subhas Sarkar said with regard to conversion of state universities and colleges into Central universities, the ministry had taken a policy decision against it for the reasons of legacy issues, adjustment of existing staff and the affiliation of colleges.

He said this in response to a query by AAP Rajya Sabha member Vikramjeet Sawhney on Wednesday.

The minister said: "The Panjab University was established under Punjab University Act, 1947, and is an Inter-state body corporate under provisions of Section 72 of the Panjab Reorganization Act, 1966. As regards conversion of state universities/colleges into central universities, this Ministry has taken a policy decision not to convert such universities into central universities for reasons of legacy issues, adjustment of existing staffs and disaffiliation of affiliated colleges."
