CHANDIGARH: In the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2019 released on Wednesday, Panjab University (PU) with 1487 publications, figures on the 737 rank in the field of sciences among 963 universities globally.

In the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2019 released on Wednesday, Panjab University (PU) with 1487 publications, figures on the 737 rank in the field of sciences among 963 universities globally.

These universities were selected basis of their number of Web of Science indexed publications in the period 2014–2017. Besides, the PU scored 7.7 per cent on the PP top 10 per cent (proportion of a university’s publications, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 10 per cent most frequently cited).

The rankings explore the performance of universities in six different fields, including biomedical and health sciences, life and earth sciences, mathematics and computer science, physical sciences and engineering and social sciences and humanities.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2019 offers a sophisticated set of bibliometric indicators that provide statistics at the level of universities on scientific impact, collaboration, open access publishing, and gender diversity.

PU’s scientific impact, across India

Accessed on the ‘scientific impact’ indicator, among Indian universities, in the field of all sciences, the PU has secured the 16th rank. In the field of biomedical and health sciences, the university stood seventh in India with 6.4 per cent on PP top 10 per cent and 14th in life and earth sciences category. While Thapar University ranked 11th, the PU lagged behind on the 19 rank in the field of mathematics and computer science. The PU also ranked 19 the in the field of physical sciences and engineering.

Academia-industry collaborations

With collaboration as an indicator, the PU, in the field of all sciences has been ranked 15th with 37 collaborative publications with industry in a three-year period. With a total 10 collaborative industry-university publications, the varsity was ranked 7 in the field of biomedical and health sciences, while it was ranked 14th in the field of life and earth sciences with four collaborative publications to its credit. In the field of mathematics and computer science, the PU bagged the 19th rank while Thapar University ranked 10th.

On 13th rank in physical sciences and engineering, the PU has to its merit 14 collaborative publications with industry. No other Indian university, except Delhi University figures on the list of collaborative publications in the field of social sciences and humanities.

Open access and PU

When it comes to ‘open access’ publishing, a new indicator introduced by the CWTS Leiden Ranking, the PU was ranked 15th with 981 open access publications in the field of all sciences. It ranked seventh in the field of biomedical and health sciences, 14th in life and earth sciences and 19th in mathematics and computer science. In the field of physical science and engineering, it scored the 14th rank and only Delhi University figured on the list of open access publications in the field of social sciences and humanities.

Gender, new indicator

The Leiden Ranking provides several indicators of gender diversity, including the total number of authorships of a university, the number of authorships of a university for which the gender is unknown and the number of authorships for which the gender is unknown as a proportion of a university’s total number of authorships. No Indian university qualified for the gender category of the rankings.
