The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal today appealed to the UT Administrator to allow all type of shops – essential and non-essential – to be kept open on the pattern of recent announcement made by the Punjab Government.

Mandal president Charanjiv Singh said traders should be allowed to open their shops from Monday onwards as Punjab has already done so.

“It is not justified to keep shops closed when banks, offices and industry are allowed to function and public is moving freely during this partial lockdown,” he said.

Such lockdowns are making it difficult for the traders to pay their rents and meet other expenditures like salaries, taxes, electricity and water charges, etc., Charanjiv Singh added.

Suffering financial losses, the government must immediately announce some relief packages for the trader community, he insisted.

Mandal chief spokesperson Diwakar Sahoonja said the government must ensure strict implementation of Covid guidelines in all shops, offices and markets. A complete lockdown should be the last resort, he said.

Charanjiv Singh said they would reassure the government that they would support all anti-Covid measures and also help in all types of relief efforts being undertaken by the government.

He said the CBM would hold meeting of the senior office-bearers on Monday evening to review the situation and plan future course of action.
