Chandigarh, December 6

Acting on the  directions  of the  Centre, the UT Administration has revised the stock limit of onion for traders.

In an order issued today by the Food and Civil Supplies   Department, the onion stock limit has  been  reduced to half.

Now, wholesalers are allowed to keep only  25 MT instead of 50 MT, while retailers can keep  only 5 MT  instead of 10 MT allowed  earlier.

Sources said the city  received only 700  quintals of onion today. While the UT Administration is waiting for a response from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) regarding adequate supply of onion for the city, the  prices of the  commodity showed some signs of reduction  today — Rs 5 to Rs 10 per kg.

Rajan, a trader, said though the  rates   had  come  down from  Rs 100  to  Rs 90 per  kg in the retail  market, these were not likely  to reduce further  as the supply  was not improving.

Wholesalers can now keep only 25 MT

  • Now, wholesalers are allowed to keep only 25 MT instead of 50 MT, while retailers can keep only 5 MT instead of 10 MT allowed earlier.

Teams check stocks

  • Two teams of the Food and Civil Supplies Department inspected the stocks of onion at the fruit and vegetable market in Sector 26 on Friday. The teams checked the records of arrivals and directed the traders to maintain proper records.
