Chandigarh, July 19

A 38-year-old woman has been duped of Rs 3.25 lakh by a fraudster, posing as an NRI, whom she had met on a matrimonial site.

The woman, a resident of Sector 30, claimed she had uploaded her profile on a matrimonial site in July 2021. A month later, she received a request from a profile, created under name Amit Bedi, who claimed to be a US resident.

The suspect started calling the complainant on WhatsApp and expressed his desire to marry her. The complainant alleged the suspect claimed he would visit India on September 1.

She subsequently received a call from a man claiming to be an Airports Authority of India official, saying Amit had been detained at the Mumbai airport with excess US dollars.

She was asked to deposit tax against the cash and given an HDFC Bank account number. The complainant took the bait and transferred Rs 3.25 lakh to the said account.

When the suspect started demanding more money, the victim realised she has been duped.
