Chandigarh, December 4

Ahead of the visit of a Kayakalp team from the Centre to inspect cleanliness at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, the hospital authorities went on an overdrive to make the premises spick and span.

For the past few days, the hospital staff has been on a job to clean the whole premises to impress the team coming on a visit under an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Director-Principal Dr BS Chavan, along with officials concerned, took a round of the hospital on Monday and listed 16 different works to be carried out on the premises. Various shortcomings were detected and officials were conveyed to fix them before the team visits the hospital on Wednesday.

Broken tiles to be fixed, plants to be arranged in rooms, all windowpanes to be washed, all internal roads to be cleaned, canteen contractor to be asked to remove the condemned material, parking area to be cleaned, holes of rodents to be filled and pits to be encircled with caution tape — these were among the works the officials concerned were entrusted to do.

Leaving aside there primary job, about 12 security guards were seen lifting and placing a giant flowerpot at the entrance of the Administrative Block late on Tuesday night to welcome the Kayakalp team.

“After the team would leave, the situation will be the same again. Why don’t officials ensure cleanliness at the hospital throughout the year? Why do they wake up only to impress a Central team?”, commented  a senior hospital functionary.

When contacted, GMCH Director Dr BS Chavan said, “We are generally more involved in clinical facility. But, Kayakalp is a very good initiative of the government. Through this, we are able to improve the system. However, our endeavour will be to sustain it and make it a regular affair.”
