A surprise checking in barrack number 5 of the high security Amritsar Central Jail here on Thursday led to recovery of four mobile phones from four prisoners and an unclaimed cell phone.

The police have registered a case under Sections 42 and 52-A of the Prisons Act against Jagjit Singh, alias Laddi, of Awan Khan village in Gurdaspur, Sahib Singh, alias Sabha, of Talwandi Rai Dadu, Daljit Singh, alias Bubbla, of Gehri Mandi village and Lovepreet Singh, alias Kallu, of Talwandi Rai Dadu in Ajnala.

The Assistant Superintendent (Jails), Davinder Singh, said a surprise checking was carried out in room number 6 of barrack number 5, where the jail staff found an unclaimed mobile phone with a battery and a SIM card. The staff also recovered two mobile phones with a battery and SIM cards from Sahib, Daljit and Lovepreet Singh.

During a checking at room number 3 of barrack number 7, the jail authorities recovered one abandoned mobile phone and another mobile phone from Jagjit, he said.

The Superintendent (Jails), Arshdeep Singh, said the jail authorities had launched a drive to conduct a surprise checking at regular intervals. This has led to the seizure of a number of phones, besides other prohibited items. He said the drive would continue in the future too.

Ex-PWD engineer among three booked for fraud

The Amritsar rural police have booked three persons, including a former PWD engineer, for allegedly duping four local residents on the pretext of getting them recruited in government departments.

The accused were identified as Darshan Singh Shahi, a former PWD engineer at Chandigarh, Ranjit Kaur and Garry of Mohali.

Tek Chand, a resident of Jandiala, stated to the police that besides him, the accused also defrauded Avtar Singh, Karan Sharma and Shamsher Singh on similar grounds. He alleged he took Rs 3 lakh each from him, Avtar and Karan Sharma while Shamsher gave Rs 4 lakh to the suspects. He said the deal struck at a petrol pump on the Jandiala-Tarn Taran road in December 2017. The victims had lodged a complaint with the police in September 2019 and a probe was conducted by the SP investigations in this connection.

After taking legal opinion, the police registered a case under Section 420 and 120B of the IPC against them. No arrest has been made till now while further investigations are under progress, said the police authorities.

Woman lodges rape plaint against husband

Tarn Taran: Ravinder Singh of Sarai Amanat Khan has been booked under Section 376 of the IPC on a complaint of rape by his wife, who has alleged that five years after their marriage, Ravinder was not willing to live with her.

In her complaint, Manjit Kaur (31) stated to the police that in 2014, she had got married to Ravinder in a court because of objections from their families.

In February 2019, her husband told her that he wanted to get married with another woman whom he loved, Manjit said. She alleged that by abandoning her, her husband had ruined her life. The police are conducting raids to nab Ravinder.
