1,000 street vendors still squatting in public places

AMBALA, JANUARY 20

Over 1,000 street vendors continue to squat in public places, busy roadsides and streets in Ambala Cantonment as the Municipal Council (MC) has failed to develop vending zones for relocating and giving space to the 650 registered vendors.

On December 4 last year, the district administration had decided to register street vendors and develop vending zones to relocate them in Ambala. In Ambala Cantonment alone, over 1,000 vendors were operating from various parts of the town and 650 had so far registered themselves with the MC.

Secretary Rajesh Kumar said two vending zones were being developed at Gandhi Ground and Dina Mandi for registered vendors. The two vending zones under construction shall accommodate only a maximum of 300 vendors only. According to the official plan, registered vendors were supposed to be allotted dedicated space in vending zones through draw of lots by January 1 but the same got delayed due to the ongoing work to develop the vending zones.— TNS
