As many as 200 MBBS students of the final year of Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC) have been roped in to provide teleconsultation services to those who undergo home isolation after testing positive for Covid-19. Besides, 20 doctors have also been assigned the duty to guide and monitor the working of these students.

Students, doctors to recommend isolation

On the recommendation of these students and their consultant doctors, our ambulances will pick up patients from their houses and shift them to home care support centre where oxygen and doctor facility is available round the clock.

“Each doctor will guide 10 students and each student will call 25 patients twice in a day — morning and evening. They will not only inquire about the health of the home-isolated patients based on parameters fixed by the Health Department, but also compile details on a portal. If students feel the requirement to shift the patient to a hospital, they will immediately inform their consultant doctor, who will further inform the health authorities for further action,” said Nishant Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, while chairing a training session for these students at Dr Mangal Sen Auditorium in the city on Sunday.

At present, there are 5,439 active cases in the district, 344 patients died and 92 per cent patients are home isolated. Only 8 per cent are serious and hospitalised.

“On the recommendation of these students and their consultant doctors, our ambulances will pick up patients from their houses and shift them to home care support centre where oxygen and doctor facility is available round the clock,” the DC maintained. These students will also boost the morale of the patients, said the DC.

“The teleconsultation will help the students in enhancing their experience of inquiring about the health of different patients. To motivate these students, we will give them marks in internal assessment,” said Dr Jagdish Dureja, Director, KCGMC.

The Health Department also trained these students not to lose patience. “We have trained our students to keep patience as sometimes the patient may get frustrated, but our students will continue to call in the morning and evening daily,” said Dr Yogesh Sharma, Civil Surgeon.

He said teleconsultation would help the department to monitor the health of home -isolated patients on day to day basis. The team of IMA doctors of Karnal is also working on teleconsultation for the home-isolated patients.
