Ambala, February 22

The police have booked two persons in connection with the death of 23-year-old woman Harjit Kaur, who allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Harjit’s husband Gurcharan Singh and mother-in-law Kirandeep Kaur.

In his complaint to the police, Dalmit Singh, a resident of Punjab, alleged his daughter Harjit got married to Gurcharan Singh in November last year. A few days after the marriage Gurcharan Singh and Kirandeep started harassing her daughter for not bringing adequate dowry.

“My daughter apprised me of the situation but we kept telling her that everything would be fine soon. They were demanding a car and we had sought some time to fulfil their demand. On Sunday, my daughter informed my wife over phone that her husband and mother-in-law were harassing her again. Around 2.20 pm, Guracharan called us up and when we reached their house we saw that my daughter is lying dead in her bedroom,” he said.

A case has been registered under Sections 304-B and 34 of the IPC at the Baldev Nagar police station.
